15 August: A Celebration of India, Our Freedom and Our Pride

Independence Day is not just another holiday on the calendar. For every Indian, 15 August is a day of pride, remembrance and gratitude.

On 15 August 1947, India emerged as a free nation after a long and courageous struggle. Millions contributed to the freedom movement, and countless freedom fighters made extraordinary sacrifices so that future generations could live in an independent India.

From the courage of Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Rani Lakshmibai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai and countless other known and unsung heroes, India's freedom story is a testament to courage, sacrifice and an unbreakable spirit.

That is why 15 August deserves to be celebrated on 15 August.

The Day India Became Free

For decades, Indians fought for the right to determine their own destiny.

The freedom movement united people across regions, languages, communities and backgrounds under one powerful idea — India must be free.

The freedom we enjoy today came at a tremendous cost.

15 August therefore gives us an opportunity not only to celebrate our freedom but also to remember those who sacrificed their lives, families, careers and comforts for the nation.

Every time the Tricolour rises, it should remind us of that journey.

Every time we sing the National Anthem, it should remind us of our shared identity.

And every time we say Jai Hind, it should come from a genuine sense of pride in our nation.

Why We Should Celebrate on 15 August

In many workplaces, Independence Day programmes are conducted on 14 August because 15 August is a public holiday.

But India's Independence Day is 15 August — not 14 August.

A holiday should not diminish the importance of the occasion.

Instead, organisations can create a simple and practical process that enables employees across India to participate in the celebration on the actual national day.

Whether an employee is working in a corporate office in Mumbai, a project site in Uttar Pradesh, a branch in Gujarat, a warehouse in Maharashtra or a field location in any part of India, the message should remain the same:

15 August belongs to India.

One Nation. One Tricolour. One Celebration.

India is vast and diverse.

Every honest worker, responsible citizen, entrepreneur, engineer, teacher, farmer, soldier, doctor, driver, technician and professional contributes to India's progress.

Our workplace can also become a place where the spirit of nation building is encouraged.

The true meaning of Independence Day goes beyond flag hoisting.

It reminds us of our responsibility to build a stronger India.

A Tricolour Above Every Workplace

Imagine the Tricolour being proudly hoisted on 15 August at workplaces across India — from corporate headquarters to remote project sites.

Different cities.

Different teams.

Different professions.

But one India.

That is the spirit we want to create.

One Nation. One Tricolour. One Spirit. One Celebration.

This Independence Day, let us not celebrate merely because it is a holiday.

Let us celebrate because India is free.

Let us remember the sacrifices that gave us freedom.

Let us celebrate the achievements of our nation.

And let us commit ourselves to building the India of tomorrow.

A Request to the Government of India

We respectfully request the Government of India to consider this matter at a national level.

The government could encourage organisations across the country to make 15 August the preferred and actual date for Independence Day celebrations, rather than routinely shifting workplace celebrations to 14 August.

This does not necessarily require a major administrative change.

A clear national message and appropriate advisory could encourage:

• Government offices and institutions
• Public-sector organisations
• Private companies
• Schools and colleges
• Factories and industrial establishments
• Project and field organisations
• Resident and community associations
• Other institutions across the country

to celebrate Independence Day on 15 August, wherever operational circumstances permit.

The objective should not be to impose unnecessary administrative requirements on organisations.

The objective should be to restore the centrality of 15 August in our collective celebration of India's independence.

An Appeal to Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi

We also respectfully request our Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, to consider addressing the nation on this subject.

A message from the Prime Minister could encourage citizens, businesses, institutions and organisations across India to come together on 15 August and celebrate the country's Independence Day on the actual day. A national appeal could create awareness without placing an unnecessary burden on employers or employees.

It could also inspire millions of Indians to make Independence Day celebrations more meaningful.
