India's Most Affordable Plug-in Hybrid SUV Could Be on the Way

#

JSW MG Motor India is reportedly preparing to launch its first plug-in hybrid SUV in the country. According to industry reports, with demand for electric and hybrid vehicles continuing to grow in India, the company may introduce the Wuling Starlight 560 under the MG brand, making it one of the most affordable plug-in hybrid SUVs available in the Indian market.

Positioned Above the Hector

The upcoming SUV is expected to be positioned above the MG Hector in the brand's lineup and target the premium SUV segment.

It could compete with modern premium SUVs, including electric offerings such as Mahindra's XEV 9e and other similarly positioned vehicles.

Spacious Family-Oriented SUV

The dimensions are expected to provide ample cabin space for passengers. The model is likely to be introduced in a seven-seater configuration in India, making it a practical choice for larger families.

Feature-Rich Cabin

The upcoming SUV is expected to offer a host of modern features, including a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster, and advanced connected-car technology. Comfortable seating, a spacious cabin, and a range of premium convenience features are also likely to be part of the package.

Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain With 100 km Electric Range

Powering the SUV will be a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a 20.5 kWh battery pack. The vehicle will use plug-in hybrid technology, allowing it to operate in pure electric mode for daily commutes and short-distance travel.

The SUV is expected to deliver an electric-only driving range of around 100 kilometres on a single charge. Once the battery is depleted, the petrol engine will automatically take over, ensuring uninterrupted long-distance travel without range anxiety.

Modern and Premium Design

In terms of design, the Starlight 560 features a bold front fascia with a large grille that enhances its road presence. The SUV will also come equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, further adding to its premium appeal. Its contemporary styling has been designed to attract both young buyers and family-oriented customers.

Expanding India's Plug-in Hybrid Market

Plug-in hybrid vehicles remain a niche segment in India, largely due to their higher pricing compared to conventional hybrids and internal combustion engine vehicles. However, if MG launches the Starlight 560 at a competitive price point, it could help make plug-in hybrid technology more accessible to Indian consumers.

While the company has not yet officially confirmed the launch date or pricing details, the SUV is expected to generate significant interest among buyers looking for a balance between electric mobility and long-distance practicality.
